Scot Marciel was confirmed by the Senate of the United States of America to serve as Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia.  Prior to his confirmation, Ambassador Marciel served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the East Asia and Pacific Bureau, which is responsible for relations with Southeast Asia, and concurrently as Ambassador for ASEAN Affairs.
Ambassador Marciel, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, joined the State Department in 1985. He has served as Director of the Department’s Office of Maritime Southeast Asia, Director of the Office of Mainland Southeast Asia, and Director of the Office of Southeastern Europe.
Ambassador Marciel also has served in Vietnam, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Brazil, and Turkey, as well as in the Economic Bureau’s Office of Monetary Affairs.
Ambassador Marciel grew up in Fremont, California. He is a graduate of the University of California at Davis and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.  He and his wife Mae have two daughters.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.
  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, marketing, engineering, business administration or related field is required.
  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in economics research and/or journalism, marketing, trade promotion, business management, commercial banking, or other closely related field is required.
  • Level 4 (fluent) in speaking/reading/writing both in English and Bahasa Indonesia are required. Language proficiency will be tested.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of the Indonesian economy in general and of Indonesian business customs, practices, marketing channels, laws, regulations and policies relating to assigned commercial functions.
  • Must have a sound knowledge of U.S. business practices and official policies as related to international trade and investment.
  • Must have the ability to develop and maintain an extensive range of appropriate mid and senior-level contacts in the Indonesian government and private sector. Ability to plan, organize and execute complex commercial research projects and to prepare precise and accurate factual and analytic reports. Ability to render advice with detachment and objectivity, employing sound professional judgment. When appropriate, ability to provide training and supervision to subordinate employees.




Economic Assistant, FSN-9*, FSN-78/2011
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in economics, business, accounting, law, humanities, science or related field is required.
  • At least three years of experience in economics, business, a related field, government, and/or NGOs is required.
  • Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing English and Bahasa Indonesia are required. Must be able to draft in English and to provide summaries of Indonesian news sources. Must be able to act as interpreter and translator, as needed. Language proficiency will be tested.
  • Good working knowledge of Indonesian economic policy, business practices, and government policies.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data, to prepare precise and accurate reports in English, to work with outside Indonesian counterparts and Embassy budget and fiscal, procurement, travel, and public affairs staff.
  • Good computer skills, including spreadsheet, information and data collection.
